Hello Criminal and Civil Law Students:
Here is another assignment to keep you learning. Research and answer the following questions. Type up your answers and send them to me, through my school email, by 5pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Write in complete sentences.
Macomb County Prosecutor, Eric Smith, was arraigned in a local district court this past week. Note: the Eric Smith events cannot be used to satisfy the March 23, 2020 extra credit assignment.
1. Where was he arraigned, and what does it mean to be arraigned?
2. What were the charges? What do each of these charges allege he did?
3. Why did a judge from Oakland County preside over the arraignment?
4. If you were the prosecutor, what evidence would you want to have for each charge? (Give an example for each charge.)
Remember, no one is above the law---not even your local prosecutors!
I hope we are back together again soon.

Hello Criminal and Civil Law Students:
I hope you are staying safe during this mandatory shutdown. Given that the textbook is not available online, and too many of you were absent on March 13, 2020, it is challenging for me to give you work to do that I had previously planned. However, as criminal law and criminal procedure is constantly in the news, I would like to offer you an extra-credit assignment. Using the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, or Macomb Daily websites, find an example of two different crimes against people and 2 different crimes against persons that have occurred in Michigan since the start of second semester. For each of the above crimes, do the following:
1. Print a copy of the article
2. On a separate sheet of paper write out the following:
a. Summarize what happened in the article
b. State the name of the criminal activity at issue
c. Define and explain the crime as it exists under Michigan law
d. Explain how that is the same or different from the information you learned from the textbook
Your work must be in complete sentences. Your work must be done in the "a, b, c, d" format above. It does not have to be typed, but it must be completed neatly. The extra-credit points given to you will be based on your ability to follow the directions above, accuracy, and the quality of your work. The extra-credit work is due on the day that we finally return to school.
Check back here for additional extra-credit opportunities. If you have any questions regarding this assignment, please contact me at my school email address. I miss our 5th Hour time together.
Stay safe!
